![]() A score of 2,000 or higher on this test is all you need, and the Spectre Folio clears that handily. PCMark Work 8 Conventional tests performance in mainstream computing. The Core i5-8250U has a 3.4GHz max, and the the Core i7-8550U tops out at 4GHz (while the Core i5-7Y54 lags at 3.2GHz). While the latter two have the inherent advantage of being quad-core, the Core i7-8500Y’s high 4.2GHz maximum turbo frequency helps a lot. If you grip it from the top, it transitions smoothly. The flip is harmless, but it momentarily looks like the display has broken off. The first few times you use the display, you might flip it outward accidentally, especially if you grip it from the side. The HP Spectre Folio’s display moves from clamshell to viewing to tablet modes. Notice that in tablet mode, the flipped display covers the keyboard, so you don’t have that weird upside-down keyboard situation of most convertibles. ![]() You can flip it out from the middle partway into a tentlike viewing mode, or completely flat to use like a tablet. It attaches only to the top part of the lid, with a hinge in the middle, and gentle magnets at the bottom. The screen design is unusually versatile. ![]() This frugal design helps achieve the Spectre Folio’s long battery life. For one, it uses Intel’s low-power display technology (LDPT), which runs on as little as 1 watt of power (up to 1.5W-1.6W at maximum brightness), compared to 2 watts for a typical non-LPDT display. The Spectre Folio’s 13.3-inch touchscreen is bright and crisp with wide viewing angles, but there’s a lot more to it. There’s even a “Cool” mode you can set via the system BIOS (a “Balanced” mode is the default), but we’d guess performance would take a big dive if you did so. HP confirmed this reading to be “within tolerance.” The Spectre Folio’s dismal performance in our HandBrake CPU test (see our Performance section, below) suggests that, overall, the laptop sacrifices performance to stay cool. I measured it with a FLIR sensor at 109.8 degrees Fahrenheit, concentrated (not surprisingly) over the CPU. It got noticeably hotter on a couple of random occasions, after extended use. This FLIR heat sensor map shows the hot spot that developed occasionally around the CPU on the HP Spectre Folio’s slender motherboard. The leather is soft and breathable, and its texture makes it less prone to sliding off my knees. My experience when the Spectre Folio is actually on my lap seals the deal. The leather edge made ports a little hard to access. The glued edges of the leather are potentially the weakest point, but so far they’ve held strong. I also appreciate how the Spectre Folio’s surface is easy to grip and doesn’t show fingerprints. After several months of use, it still looks like new. I carried the Spectre Folio in a laptop bag, as I would with any laptop, and I treated it just like any laptop. But t here’s also a somewhat less intuitive caution: “ HP does not recommend applying leather protectant or sealant products.” And notably, most of HP’s care instructions-such as cleaning with a soft cloth, and avoiding harsh chemicals and abrasive surfaces-would also apply to a hard-shell laptop. HP advises taking care of the Spectre Folio just as you would a leather jacket or handbag. It’s stain- and water-resistant, with a pebbly texture.

Most patients do not need a second booster to be considered fully vaccinated. People are best protected after receiving a booster at least five months after their second dose of the original vaccine. When gefilte fish - gefilte means “stuffed” in Yiddish - emerged in medieval German-Jewish cookery, the flesh was removed from the bones, mixed with matzoh meal or bread and onions, seasoned, and stuffed into the skin, which was then sewn up and roasted.īy the 16th century, Ashkenazic cooks in Germany eliminated the stuffing step and instead poached the fish mixture in fish broth. Indeed, the jarred variety with which most people are familiar “seemed to have been fashioned, golem-like, from packing materials and crushed hope,” said Rebecca Flint Marx, a food writer, when describing the version from her Midwest childhood. Millennials Jeffrey Yoskowitz and Liz Alpern are leading the way with “their mission to reimagine Eastern European cuisine.” Their cookbook, “ The Gefilte Manifesto,” is filled with Old World recipes including herbed gefilte fish, baked terrines of fish and poached gefilte “quenelles,” as well as the original deal: Old World Stuffed Gefilte Fish.Īs author Stephen King wrote, “Sooner or later, everything old is new again.” As it is with life, so it is with gefilte fish.Gefilte fish, the oval-shaped balls of ground fish most commonly associated with the Passover holiday, might resemble quenelles, the French comestible often linked with the cuisine of Lyon, but you won’t find gefilte fish in Escoffier’s “Le Guide Culinaire.” All you had to do was boil water with carrots, onions and celery, then pop in the frozen loaf.Īs many of us have begun to look back on our roots, the food of the shtetl has made a comeback in recent years. The bottled stuff was just palatable, but in the late 1970s, consumers were offered the chance to make their own fresh gefilte fish without the fuss, muss and odor: Frozen loaves of ready-made gefilte fish swam in to save the day. Old World met New in mass-produced jars of gefilte fish. Mother’s was joined by Manischewitz, Mrs. Shortly before the Second World War, Sidney Leibner, the son of a fish store owner, began selling ready-made gefilte fish under the name Mother’s Fish Products - first canned, and later in glass bottles. ![]() Others were happy to move on.Īnd that’s when some enterprising Jewish businessmen moved in to fill the gefilte fish void. Did you really want a carp in your bathtub waiting for its end? Did you really want your home reeking of the malodorous scent of fish? For some, preparing it was a triumph of old school cuisine. Over time, gefilte fish lost some of its appeal. And it heralded the start of the Passover seder, too. Thursday’s fresh carp became Friday night’s first course. They were purchased from the fishmonger early in the week and left to frolic in the tub before their home sacrifice. They were surrounded by well-stocked rivers, streams and lakes.Īs the Eastern European Jews left their shtetls, they brought their cuisine with them. Many of us have heard stories of fresh carp swimming in bathtubs on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Plus, for the Jewish communities in Germany and Eastern Europe, it was easy to gain access to the fresh, sweet fish that is ground to make the dish. The rabbis considered fish to be the perfect food to kick off a Sabbath or holiday meal, since fish symbolize the coming of the Messiah and fertility. It was a popular dish for Catholics during Lent, when eating meat was forbidden.īy the Middle Ages, that Catholic dish had migrated into the Jewish kitchen under the moniker gefilte (stuffed) fish. The first mention of gefuelten hechden (stuffed pike) comes from a 700-year-old, non-Jewish, German cookbook in which poached and mashed fish was flavored with herbs and seeds, stuffed back into the skin and roasted. The funny thing is that gefilte fish didn’t start out as a Jewish food. For good reason - it’s been part of the Eastern European Jewish diet for hundreds of years. Some see gefilte fish as a delicacy, others as something too disgusting to contemplate. Either way, it would probably appear on most people’s short list of classic Ashkenazi foods. This article originally appeared on The Nosher, 70 Faces Media’s Jewish food site. It would have also been ethical to offer a refund for refreshments. Git’s cloud incarnation, GitHub, has become the public face of source control - where recruiters look at candidates’ code and commits and where much of the world’s open source software is developed and shared. From its birth of scratching Linus Torvalds’ version-control itch, it has grown to become the repository of choice. Since returning, I've spent more time fiddling with this desktop app and command line than I have actually doing any work.Git has become the lingua franca of code. I was able to create, clone, or modify (including the files) any repo from the app itself. It's been some time since I've been active on GitHub and I remember an app they had released a few years ago, perhaps just an earlier edition of this, that was far easier to use and actually worked. Never mind the contradictory and often confusing information that is available for the app. I experienced the same issues going through the tutorial, waiting nearly two full minutes to "commit" the ReadMe it auto-generated. What the hell is the point in having a desktop app if I'm still forced to use command line because the app is so awful? Cloning five files took me ~20 minutes. I actually had to take the longer route and use Git Bash. One of my repos is a 10k file package that totals less than 30MB and yet, when adding the repo via GitHub Desktop and trying to do my first commit to master (before publishing), it just sits for hours. ![]() It's slow, awkward, and frequently crashes.
